Stirring through the Years
By Paul Nardone, CEO
I think I got an idea about the glamour of bartending because it seemed a good way to put a positive spin on looking older than my 17 years. That spin is harder to make now that I really am older, but at 17, the fact that I looked older enabled me to land a bartending job at a local catering company. Mixing drinks, I learned, is an art form, a talent, that requires patience, inspiration, and drama.
I loved bartending, and some time a few years later when I was a junior in college, I landed my dream job at Bennigan's Bar and Grill in Greater Boston. A high volume spot, the bar was a crazy scene. It was the summer of Tom Cruise's "Cocktail" and mixing the quintessential concoction was the mark of your manhood. I knew it would be a great summer, I had the weekend shifts sewn up, I knew my drinks, and I could mix a Long Island Iced Tea, pouring four bottles at once. This trick upped me to high status, added extra recognition, and won me some points with the women working the bar.
As a college kid, cocktailing was aspirational. I began dating the best waitress in the bar, and after that long, hot summer, I put my passion for cocktails on the back burner.
Twenty years later, that waitress is my beautiful wife, and while I don't make a Long Island Iced Tea quite like I used to -- the four bottle trick is beyond me, I can still impress my wife with a Stirrings pomegranate martini. The kids are playing in the backyard, something's on the grill, and I'm working for the coolest company around.
